Seoul, June 12 (QNA) - The defense ministers of Japan, the United States and South Korea held talks in Singapore, amid increased tensions caused by the North's recent ballistic missile launches and its preparations for a nuclear test soon.
It was agreed to step up cooperation to counter North Korea's missile threats through their combined regular security exercises, including missile warning drills.
The Korean Defense Minister Lee Jong-sup, his US counterpart Lloyd Austin and the Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi agreed, during their meeting on the sidelines of the annual Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, to conduct missile warning exercises between South Korea, the United States and Japan, and search on ballistic missiles and their tracking, (Yonhap) News Agency reported Sunday. No date has been set for the training programs yet.
The Defense Ministers also pledged that their countries would work closely for the common goal of achieving complete denuclearization and lasting peace on the Korean peninsula. They also stressed the importance of continued international cooperation aimed at deterring, disrupting and ultimately eliminating North Korea's illegal ship-to-ship transfers.
The three defense ministers sent a clear message to China expressing their strong opposition to any unilateral actions that change the status quo and increase regional tension, stressing the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. (QNA)
