Ehsan, NHRC Organize Elderly Awareness Seminar

Doha, June 14 (QNA) - The Center for Empowerment and Care of the Elderly (Ehsan), in association with the National Human Rights Committee (NHRC), organized Tuesday a seminar titled "Protecting the Elderly: Responsibilities and Tools" in celebration of the United Nations World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, themed for 2022 "Addressing violence and abuse against older persons".
Vice-Chairman of the NHRC Mohammed bin Saif Al Kuwari said in his opening statement that raising awareness of the rights of the elderly is one of the methods that enable one to elevate their state in accordance with the noble human values. The importance of observing this day comes from it being an international recognition of the need to protect the elderly from mistreatment, and to reject all the abuse and insults that they are subject to, he added. He stressed the centrality of developing an international and national response to eliminate this problem that is only predicted to worsen in the coming years, as the percentage of people growing older and entering this category rises.
For his part, CEO of Qatar Foundation for Social Work Ahmad bin Mohammed Al Kuwari said that the State of Qatar has noticed the issue of abuse of old people early on, ensured the passing of related laws, and implemented means to prevent it. Al Kuwari pointed out to the Qatari legislative on the matter, with the constitution in the forefront, where it stresses the importance of the elderly in general and provides them with social security, housing, employment, in addition to legal and social protection.
During the discussion, the director of the home care unit at Ehsan Musheera Hamad Al Shahwani presented a worksheet titled "raising awareness of elderly abuse and its consequences," which defined what is meant by abuse and what it entails, its types, and its consequences. The discussion also shed light on the responsibilities and roles of protecting old people from abuse, highlighting the role Ehsan plays in raising awareness about the issue, and she concluded by suggesting ways to defend them.
On the other hand, Acting Director of the Legal Affairs Department at NHRC Nasser Marzouq Al Sultan presented a worksheet under the title of "Best International Practices to Raising Awareness and Prevent Old People's Abuse" elaborating on the UN's efforts to deal with this issue. (QNA)
