Tashkent, June 19 (QNA) - The Saudi national football team won the AFC U-23 championship after beating Uzbekistan 2-0 in the final match on Sunday at Milliy Stadium in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan.
The Saudi team advanced with a goal from Ahmed Al Ghamdi in the 48th minute, and Firas Al Braikan scored the second goal in the 74th minute.
This is the first time that the Saudi national team has won the title knowing that the Uzbekistan team won the title in the tournament edition held in 2018.
The Saudi team qualified for this round after leading the fourth group in the group stage, then beating Vietnam 2-0 in the quarter-finals and beating the Australian team with two clean goals in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, Uzbekistan qualified for this round after leading the first group, defeated Iraq 3-2 on penalties after the end of regular and extra time with a 2-2 draw, then defeated the Japanese team with two clean goals in the semi-finals.
The Japanese national team secured the third place after beating Australia 3-0 on Saturday, at Pakhtakor Stadium in Tashkent, in the match to determine the third and fourth places.
Ken Sato scored in the 7th minute, Australian Kai Troen (39 by an own goal) and Shota Fujio (63) scored the winning goals for the Japanese team. (QNA)
