Qatari Forum For Authors Organizes Second Session of "Biography And Journey of Translator" Initiative

Doha, June 23 (QNA) - The Qatari Forum for Authors hosted Samar Al-Shishakli, the writer and translation expert at the Ministry of Culture, as part of the second session of the "Biography and Journey of a translator" initiative launched by the forum on June 6.
In this session, which is moderated by activist Maria Fernanda del Rio on social media and broadcast on Al-Multaqa YouTube channel, Al-Shishakli spoke about the details of her experience and areas of work.
The translation expert said that she had translated from Arabic into English and from English to Arabic until the books she translated amounted to 29 books, including novels and books of thought, history, criticism, and sociology, and the first one was titled "From Modernity to Globalization". She is currently working on a book about astronomy, astronomical observation and its evolution, male & female workers, in addition to workers in astronomical observatories. The book is set to be issued in the fall of this year.
She underscored the importance of fundamental skills that should be owned by the translator, including the linguistic skills of the mother and target languages, computer skills, translation applications, internet surfing skills for the sake of expounding phrases and terms meanings, in addition to the correct uses of everything that might potentially hinder meaning comprehension, as per specialization, indicating that the most important skill a translator should have is the passion for the profession, because it is one of the hard professions and without passion for it, no translator will be able to bear the workload.
The translation expert at the Ministry of Culture added that one of the key responsibilities of the translator is to be the translator for all people who can count on him to entirely perform the task, and not to let down the one who assigned him to work, and to abide by the deadlines, and the quality and level of translation, and the translation must not be less creative than the text from which it was copied. Generally, the translator should be educated, educated and well versed.
At the end of the session, she advised the new translators to maintain practical training and gain experience by turning a blind eye to material profit in the onset, and to self-train using dictionaries and internet sites, while surrounding themselves with experienced people.
The Qatari Forum for Authors and from its initiative "Biography and Journey of a translator" intends to spotlight the most important Qatari translators and residents in the State of Qatar, who have made significant contributions in the field of literary translation, and discusses the most important translation issues and challenges encountering them in this field, in addition to the secrets of successful translation.
