Taiwan Spots Two Chinese Military Vessels Ahead of Pelosi's Expected Visit

Taipei,August 02 (QNA) - Taiwan spotted two Chinese warships, a missile destroyer and a frigate, in international waters 45 nautical miles southeast of the Coast of Lanyu Island, eastern Taiwan Tuesday morning, the Taipei-based Central News Agency reported, citing a military official.
Over the past two days, Chinese People's Liberation Army reconnaissance vessels, as well as missile destroyers and frigates, have been plying waters southeast of Taiwan's Hualien County and Lanyu, it said.
Taiwan's National Defense Ministry did not respond directly to questions about the Chinese vessels reportedly seen near Taiwan, except to say that the Taiwan military constantly monitors Chinese naval activities in waters around Taiwan.
The reports of the Chinese ships came amid rumors of an imminent visit to Taiwan by US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Pelosi and her delegation are currently on a tour of the Indo-Pacific region and have already announced stops in Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan. Amid speculation, Pelosi will also visit Taiwan.
Also on Monday, state-run broadcaster China Central Television broadcast the test firing of a Dongfeng-17 ballistic missile, which it said was evidence of the Chinese military's "solid strength." (QNA)
