After her arrival in the first official visit of a US House Speaker to Taiwan in 25 years, Pelosi said in a statement that the congressional delegations visit to Taiwan is part of a broader trip to the Indo-Pacific including Singapore, Malaysia, South Korea and Japan.
She explained that her talks with the leaders of these countries will focus on mutual security, economic partnership and democratic governance. While the talks with Taiwan leadership will focus on reaffirming the US support for its partnership with Taiwan to serve the shared interests, including advancing a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
In Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi condemned the visit saying that Washingtons betrayal on the Taiwan issue is bankrupting its national credibility. Wang added that leaders of all countries have made it clear that they firmly adhere to the one-China policy, believe that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory, and oppose external interference in China's internal affairs on the Taiwan question.
