Konya (Turkey), August 06 (QNA) - The ceremony of raising the Qatari flag took place Saturday in the Olympic Village of the Islamic Solidarity Games in its fifth edition, which will be held in the Turkish city of Konya from August 9 to 18, with the participation of nearly 6000 athletes representing 56 countries.
Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) will compete in 16 sport disciplines, including basketball, volleyball , handball, cycling, athletics, swimming, shooting, Taekwondo, Judo, Karate, weightlifting, wrestling, fencing and gymnastics.
In preparation of its participation in the handball competitions at the 5th Islamic Solidarity Games, the Qatari team won a friendly match against its Turkish counterpart (32-30) in Konya. The Qatari national team was placed in Group A which includes Saudi Arabia, Morocco and Iraq; while Group B includes Turkey, Iran and Azerbaijan.
Formerly scheduled to take place from August 20 to 29, 2021, the event was postponed being held from September 10 to 19 in July 2020 by the ISSF because the original dates were coinciding with the 2020 Summer Olympics, which were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. (QNA)
