New York, September 14 (QNA) - The United Nations called on Tuesday for a political solution to the overall situation in Sudan to create conditions for the resumption of international financial support, including debt relief.
Briefing the Security Council Tuesday, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan and Head of the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS) Volker Perthes said that there is still a chance to reach a new political agreement that will usher in a new transitional period and put the country on a more sustainable transitional path toward democratic, civilian-led rule.
He stressed the importance of time, warning that the longer the period of political paralysis, the more difficult it would be to return to the political transition.
He also urged all actors to seize this opportunity and reach a credible agreement on a solution that enjoys legitimacy, stressing the unwavering position of the United Nations and the tripartite mechanism composed of the African Union, IGAD and UNITAMS in support of political transition efforts.
Volker underlined that humanitarian needs have now reached record levels due to the combined effect of ongoing political instability, economic crisis, escalating violence between local communities, poor harvests and floods currently affecting parts of the country. (QNA)
