Baghdad, July 01 (QNA) - Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein has called on the Swedish government to extradite the young man who burned a copy of the Holy Quran to the Iraqi government to stand trial in accordance with the Iraqi law.

A young Swedish man hailing from Iraqi origins tore up a copy of the Holy Quran and set it on fire at the Stockholm Central Mosque on Wednesday.

In statement, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Iraqi minister of foreign affairs received a phone call from his Swedish counterpart Tobias Billstrom and discussed the implications of offending the Holy Quran by one of the extremists in Stockholm.

Fuad Hussein expressed Iraq's condemnation and denunciation over this heinous act which is tantamount to grave offense against religious sanctities and provokes Muslims' feelings worldwide, pointing out that burning a copy of the Holy Quran does not come within the context of freedom of expression, but rather an incitement for violence and sowing hatred.

For his part, Billstrom expressed his country's denunciation to this act, expressing his deep regret over what transpired, indicating that Swedish government strongly rejects such acts that are hostile to Islam, as Sweden does not support or overlook opinions that are hostile to Islam anyway. He added that Sweden understands that Muslims in Sweden and other countries felt the offense for what happened. (QNA)
