Doha, March 07 (QNA) - Qatar Chamber (QC) announced on Monday its official accession to the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC).
This was revealed during a meeting between UN Senior Stakeholders Advisor and Country Manager of the Global Compact (UNGC) in Qatar and Kuwait Rabaa Hassan Al-Juma and Qatar Chamber General Manager Saleh bin Hamad Al Sharqi which was held on Monday via video conferencing, in which she expressed her welcome to Qatar's accession to the UNGC.
In a statement on Monday, HE QC Chairman Sheikh Khalifa bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al-Thani said that Qatar Chamber, as a supporter of the Qatari private sector, has been keen to join the UNGC, the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative, stressing that it would work to raise the awareness of private sector companies on this global initiative to urge them to participate in the implementation of its Ten Principles that promote better business practices in the areas of human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption.
He pointed out that these principles are in line with the Qatar National Vision 2030, whose pillars include human development, social development, economic development, and environmental development. UNGC is a key initiative to encourage companies worldwide to adopt sustainability and social responsibility, stressing that it supports companies by aligning their strategies and operations with Ten Principles, he explained.
For his part, Saleh Al Sharqi underscored the Chamber's concern to be part of this global initiative stemmed out from its strong conviction of the UNGC Ten Principles on human rights, labor, environment, and development.
Al Sharqi stressed the Chamber's keenness on the commitment to sustainable development criteria, indicating that sustainability has become of great importance across all economic sectors.
"We will work to support the UNGC's principles and initiatives that enhance the objectives of sustainable development through holding seminars and workshops for companies to raise awareness on sustainability, as well as encourage companies to adopt suitability in their businesses," he added.
On her part, Rabaa Al Juma congratulated the Chamber on joining the UNGC, citing the leading role it can perform as an incubator for the Qatari private sector by urging Qatari firms to align their operations and strategies with the UNGC Ten Principles.
Al Juma expressed the hope to bolster cooperation with Qatar Chamber, noting that the initial cooperation will be in May through holding a virtual meeting for the UNGC with the participation of Qatar and Kuwait chambers. (QNA)
