Doha, May 11 (QNA) - Mowasalat (Karwa) announced that it has started converting its fleet of "Karwa Taxi" cars that run on the traditional fuel system to environmentally-friendly electric cars.
In a press release on Wednesday, the company expected that this transformation of its fleet would save about 12,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions per taxi car compared to other taxis that operate on the traditional fuel system. This step is one of the company's main contributions to achieving Qatar's National Vision 2030, it noted.
CEO of Mowasalat (Karwa) Fahad bin Saad Al Qahtani said that the company is moving towards an environmentally friendly transportation system to reduce emissions rates and attain clean air. This new fleet will help reduce the carbon footprint of Karwa vehicles on the streets of Doha, which is a starting point on the way toward achieving the company's goal of a zero-emissions transportation system.
He added that the company will focus more on adopting innovative technologies, and work is already underway to convert the Karwa taxi fleet to fully electric cars, pointing out that all Karwa taxis operating within the city will be replaced by a full fleet of environmentally friendly hybrid taxis.
The company said that it has taken many gradual steps to adopt environmentally-friendly driving systems and alternative fuels over the past years, in pursuit of sustainable public transportation.
He explained that the environmentally friendly cars run on a self-charging hybrid electric system that works with a high-efficiency, low-emissions gasoline engine with an electric motor. During city driving, and with the speed reduced as a result of traffic, the car runs entirely on electric power when starting, stopping, or moving at a slow speed, as decreasing speed or applying the brakes converts kinetic energy from the tires into electricity, which is stored in the car battery.
Mowasalat (Karwa) was established in 2004. Since its establishment, it has played a key role as a national company in providing collective and individual transportation solutions and providing transportation services for major events. The company has enhanced its fleet with luxury limousines and taxis for people with special needs to meet the largest possible range of transportation requirements in the country. (QNA)
