Colombia Names Nestor Lorenzo New National Soccer Team Coach
Bogota, June 03 (QNA) - Colombia's soccer federation appointed Nestor Lorenzo to coach its men's national team. Lorenzo will replace Reinaldo Rueda after Colombia's team failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar 2022.
The Colombian Federation confirmed in a statement that Lorenzo will supervise its men's national team for the next four years, until the final of the next World Cup, which is to be held in Canada, the United States and Mexico 2026.
The new coach Lorenzo (56 years old) worked as an assistant in three World Cups: 2006 for Argentina and 2014 and 2018 for Colombia. Much of his career was as a key aide for coach Jose Pekerman. He also worked with Pekerman at Mexico's Toluca and Tigres. He also reached Italy's World Cup Finals 1990, as a player, with Argentine national team where he lost 0-1 for Germany.
The federation said in a statement that former Colombia captain and Atletico Madrid international defender Amaranto Perea will be Lorenzo's assistant.
The Colombian Federation hasn't yet confirmed if Lorenzo will supervise the Colombian national team in their friendly match against Saudi Arabia next Sunday as part of the Saudi team's preparations for the World Cup in Qatar. (QNA)
