Brussels, June 17 (QNA) - President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced that the Commission has recommended to member states to grant Ukraine the status of a candidate country to join the European Union.
Addressing a press conference today, Ursula said the European Commission recommends to the Council, firstly, to give Ukraine a European horizon, and secondly to grant it candidate status, and this, of course, provided that the country implements a number of important reforms.
She added that the Ukrainian people are ready to make great efforts to defend their European aspirations This opinion will be discussed at the European Summit on June 23-24, and the leaders of the 27 EU countries must unanimously endorse it.
Never before has an opinion been issued in such a short time on a candidacy application. It is an emergency due to the war in Ukraine and part of the Europeans' support for Ukraine against Moscow.
Paris, Berlin and Rome supported granting Ukraine "immediately" official candidate status yesterday during the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, who were joined by Romanian President Klaus Iohannis in Kiev.(QNA)
