Ehsan Center Celebrates World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Doha, June 19 (QNA) - The Elderly Empowerment and Care Center (Ehsan), affiliated with Qatar Foundation for Social Work, celebrated World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, where it held several workshops and awareness lectures for the benefit of youth centers and members of sports clubs and Ehsan clubs.
Awareness workshops and lectures were presented in cooperation with many agencies and ministries, including Al Majd Girls Center, Al Arabi Sports Club, Barzan Youth Center, Simaisma and Al Daayen Youth Center, and Al Gharafa Sports Club, in addition to the Ministry of Interior represented by the Community Police Department, the Economic and Cyber Crimes Department, and the Elderly Office at the General Directorate of Passports.
The workshops aimed to educate the members of these clubs and entities about the rights of the elderly, to raise awareness of the problems and challenges they face, to introduce the services provided to them, and the most important issues related to them worldwide.
Salem Al Enezi presented a number of workshops for Ehsan members, including a workshop about psychological protection, explaining that the elderly must be protected and provided for, in addition to respecting them. He also highlighted issues most prominent psychological disorders that the elderly suffer from, such as anxiety and depression, losing loved ones, thinking about death and isolation, financial insufficiency, and methods of treatment and prevention.
Human Rights Advisor from the National Human Rights Committee Dr. Amna Al Suwaidi gave a lecture on the international rights of the elderly, during which she spoke about population aging as a phenomenon that spreads in all countries of the world and explained that the number of people aged 80 and over is expected to triple. She provided a historical overview of the development of concern for the rights of the elderly and further explained the internationally binding rights and political support for the elderly.
Social worker Badriya Abdulla presented a lecture on how to deal with the elderly in problems and crises for Al Majd Girls Center, during which she talked about the free time of the elderly, and its impact on them psychologically, mentally and physically, and about the role of the family and society, as well as examples of the elderly who benefited of their spare time.
