Ramallah, June 20 (QNA) - The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed today that the right of return is one of the inalienable rights of Palestinian refugees.
In a statement on the occasion of World Refugee Day, the ministry stressed the need to ensure protection and care for refugees, displaced persons, and migrants, and to safeguard their rights as guaranteed by international law, with the issue of Palestinian refugees coming at the forefront, who were displaced from their homes in 1948, including those who had displaced in 1967, whose number today has reached more than 6,200,000 people.
Also, the ministry stressed the need to maintain sustainable political and financial support for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) until a just solution to the Palestinian refugee issue is achieved based on international legitimacy resolutions and most importantly the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 194 and Security Council Resolution 237.
The statement called for affording the necessary political and legal support to secure the rights of Palestinian refugees and displaced persons, and most essentially the right to return, in addition to implementing the relevant resolutions, including General Assembly Resolution 194 and Security Council Resolution 237, addressing the unjustified and increasing attacks on UNRWA in the context of constant attempts to undermine UNRWA, Its mandate, work and the cessation of support for it, and to deflect the attention from the ongoing crime of the Israeli occupation since the Nakba in 1948.
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry called on the international community to assume its responsibilities in confronting all violations and crimes committed against refugees, wherever they are and from any party, and to refrain from the policy of double standards and selectivity in the application of international law, and not to discriminate between refugees based on their origin, race, color, or religion, in addition to enabling the refugees to fully exercise their right to return to their homes as soon as possible.
The ministry also called on countries to actively participate in the pledges conference scheduled to be held on June 23 to provide the necessary, sustainable, and expected financial support to UNRWA. (QNA)
