Minister of Environment Stresses Importance of Developing Work Mechanisms for Wild Animal Breeding Center in Line with Market Needs

Doha, August 13 (QNA) - HE the Minister of Environment and Climate Change Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed bin Ali Al-Thani praised the important role of the Wild Animal Breeding Center Under Captivity in Al Sheehaniya area and the achievements it has accomplished in this field.
During the visit to the center, while listening to an explanation about the proposal to breed some rare and endangered species of wild animals in captivity, in order to develop their protection and breeding programs at the center, His Excellency stressed the need to develop the center's working mechanisms in line with the requirements and needs of the market, calling for harnessing the potential of the center to become an educational and awareness edifice that provides visitors with the opportunity to see the efforts made to protect rare wild animals, and to provide researchers and students with the opportunity for learning and practical application.
In the same context, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change affirmed its keenness to develop a comprehensive strategy to preserve biodiversity, preserve and protect wild animals from extinction, as one of the main pillars of the ministry entrusted with achieving equilibrium of ecosystem.
The ministry also stressed the keenness to develop a mechanism to preserve these organisms from extinction by establishing a center for the reproduction and resettlement of wild animals, and to exert more effort to increase their numbers and address the dangers they face, and the reproduction of endangered species in the wild environment, and prevent their extinction in order to restore the equilibrium of natural ecosystems in the State.
Meanwhile the ministry explained that within the framework of its efforts to protect the wild environment, a number of related studies and researches were proposed to study the state of endangered wild animals, establish a gene bank to preserve the origins of their genetic material, develop a database containing comprehensive information about local wild animals, under the supervision of a group of specialists in this field, provide the necessary medical care for wild animals, organize periodic campaigns to re-launch numbers of them in wild environments every year, as well as to organize regional and international workshops that contribute to spreading awareness of the importance of these wild animals.
The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change reiterated that as part of the international efforts of the State of Qatar in the field of protecting wild animals and preserving their environment, signed the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1996, and issued the appropriate legislation, with the State's establishment of a ministry specialized in environment and its protection. It said that all this contributed to the preservation of many wild animals living in the Qatari environment.
The ministry confirmed that a number of nature reserves has also been established to preserve various types of wild animals by keeping them away from poaching violations, in order to achieve the natural balance of biodiversity, which contributed to the preservation of some of these rare and endangered wild animals.
