The State of Qatar Participates in Group of Friends of Mediation Ministerial Meeting

New York, September 22 (QNA) - The State of Qatar participated today in the ministerial meeting of the Group of Friends of Mediation, which was held on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York at the invitation of the Republic of Turkey and the Republic of Finland.
The State of Qatar was represented in the meeting by HE Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Counterterrorism and Mediation in Conflict Resolution Dr. Mutlaq bin Majed Al Qahtani.
His Excellency stressed in the meeting that the State of Qatar will continue to work with its partners at the United Nations to prevent conflicts and work to resolve them peacefully by strengthening the role of mediation, as it is an essential pillar of foreign policy and a clear feature of Qatari diplomacy.
He highlighted the role and efforts of the State of Qatar in the field of mediation, especially in Afghanistan, as well as the peace talks between the Chadian parties, and the Iranian nuclear deal.
On Afghanistan, His Excellency said that the State of Qatar has continued its active participation and support of international efforts aimed at achieving comprehensive and sustainable peace in Afghanistan, after Doha witnessed in the year 2020 the signing of the historic peace agreement between the United States of America and the Taliban.
Dr. Al Qahtani reiterated the State of Qatar's call on all parties to work on the full implementation of the Doha Peace Agreement, so that the Afghan people enjoy stability and prosperity. He pointed out that the State of Qatar has always stressed the need to protect civilians in Afghanistan, respect human rights, including women's rights and girls' right to education, in addition to achieve national reconciliation among the Afghan people, and that the country must not become a safe haven for extremist individuals and terrorist groups.
On Chad, the Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Counterterrorism and Mediation in Conflict Resolution referred to the signing of the Doha Peace Agreement by the Chadian parties on Aug. 8, under the auspices of the State of Qatar, and the participation of political and military movements in the comprehensive sovereign national dialogue in Chad. He reiterated the State of Qatar's happiness with this positive development, which paved the way for the launch of the comprehensive national dialogue on Aug. 20 with the participation of the movements that signed the Doha Agreement along with the internal opposition. He expressed hope that this progress would bring more stability, not only in Chad, but also in the Sahel region.
Regarding the Iranian nuclear issue, His Excellency pointed out that Qatar hosted last June the round of indirect talks between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran under the auspices of the European Union Coordinator to revive the nuclear agreement. He referred to Qatar's belief in the need to reach a fair agreement on the Iranian nuclear program that takes into account the concerns of all parties, and opens the door for a broader dialogue at the level of regional security.
Regarding the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Al Qahtani recalled Qatars affirmation of its readiness to contribute to any international or regional effort with the aim of reaching a peaceful settlement in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter. He also reiterated Qatars belief that there are no military solutions to such a conflict, and its call on all parties to The need to put an end to it.
His Excellency indicated that the State of Qatar welcomed the mediation efforts made by the Republic of Turkey in this regard. He expressed Qatar's aspiration to see the grain export initiative through the Black Sea achieve tangible results in alleviating the threat to food security.
In the context of talking about addressing humanitarian crises, the Special Envoy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs stressed that this important aspect of mediation has never lost sight of the efforts of the State of Qatar in this field, pointing to its permanent efforts to address the causes of conflicts to enhance international peace and security.
