UN: Lebanon Affirms Commitment to Sovereignty, Wealth, Rights in Its Territorial Waters

New York, September 22 (QNA) - Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati affirmed on Thursday his country's commitment to its sovereignty, wealth, and rights in its territorial waters and economic zone.
In his speech before the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, he stressed Lebanon's sincere desire to reach a long-awaited negotiated solution, pointing out in the same context that tangible progress has been made, hoping to reach the aspired end soon.
The Lebanese Prime Minister-designate explained that his country is determined to protect its national interests and to invest its national resources, and is aware of the importance of the promising energy market in the Eastern Mediterranean for the prosperity of the economies of the countries of the region and meet the needs of importing countries.
Mikati expressed his appreciation to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for its sacrifices and efforts to maintain stability in southern Lebanon, in close coordination with the Lebanese army, which he said he looked forward with and through the UN to strengthening its military capabilities and alleviating the material burdens on it.
He also affirmed Lebanon's full commitment to full implementation of the provisions of Resolution 1701 and all international legitimacy resolutions.
In a context related to international frameworks sponsoring issues of disarmament in its various forms, Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati welcomed the work aimed at finding an international understanding to rid the Middle East of weapons of mass destruction in implementation of General Assembly resolution No. 73/564.
