New York, September 24 (QNA) - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud discussed with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emergency assistance to cope with the drought in his country.
During the meeting, which was held on the sidelines of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the two parties discussed the security file in Somalia, as well as development projects and economic conditions there.
The Horn of Africa region, which includes Somalia, is experiencing the worst drought in 40 years, and experts say that the region is on track to record a shortage of rains for the fifth consecutive season.
In 2011, Somalia suffered a famine that killed more than a quarter of a million people, mostly children.
The United Nations has previously warned that Somalia is facing an unprecedented drought affecting 7 million and 800.000 people, almost half of the country's population, including 213.000 at risk of famine. (QNA)
