New York, November 12 (QNA) - The State of Qatar called on the international community to assume its moral and legal responsibility to end the occupation, and to put pressure on Israel to engage in a real peace process that would enable the Palestinian people to have the right to self-determination and to reach a comprehensive and just peace in accordance with international law, relevant international legitimacy resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative.
This came in the statement of the State of Qatar delivered by the Third Secretary of the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikh Jassim bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani, before the Special Political and Decolonization Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, on the item "Israeli practices affecting human rights of Palestinian people." He stressed that the Israeli occupation of Palestine constitutes a crime and a flagrant violation of the principles of international law, the Charter of the United Nations, General Assembly resolutions, and other relevant international declarations.
In this regard, the statement reiterated the State of Qatar's condemnation of the continued Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories for 55 years, without deterrent measures from the international community to end it, or the existence of a clear horizon for a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue in accordance with international legitimacy.
The statement also reiterated the State of Qatar's affirmation that a permanent, comprehensive and just settlement of Palestine issue will only be achieved on the basis of international law, resolutions of international legitimacy and the Arab Peace Initiative, leading to ending the occupation of all occupied Arab lands, including the Syrian Golan and the occupied Lebanese territories, ending settlements, and a just solution. to the refugee issue, and the Palestinians enjoyment of their full and inalienable rights, especially their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the vision of the two-state solution.
He explained that this solution is the solution agreed upon by the international community, as the only possible way to reach a just and lasting peace.
He stressed the need not to prejudice the existing status of Al-Quds and the Islamic and Christian holy sites, especially Al-Aqsa Mosque.
He stressed the State of Qatar's condemnation of all measures that continue to violate international law in the Palestinian and Arab territories, such as discriminatory legislation, policies and procedures in the occupied Palestinian territory that violate the human rights of the brotherly Palestinian people.
He also renewed the State of Qatar's condemnation of the killing and injury of civilians, arbitrary detention, imprisonment and forced displacement, in addition to the destruction and confiscation of civilian property, including the demolition of homes, which is being systematically and continuously implemented as a collective punishment, and in flagrant violation of international humanitarian law.
Sheikh Jassim bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani stressed the rejection and condemnation of the State of Qatar for obstructing and politicizing humanitarian aid, and the unjust and continuous siege on the Gaza Strip for more than 16 years.
He referred to the continued expansion of illegal settlement, including what was recently reported about illegal activities and actions to expand settlements in the vicinity of Jerusalem, reiterating the State of Qatar's affirmation that Israeli settlements in the occupied territories are illegal and constitute an obstacle to the realization of the two-state solution, as well as an obstacle to peace and economic and social development.
He added that the State of Qatar affirms that Israel's decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration on the occupied Syrian Arab Golan is null and void and has no international legal effect.
He also reiterated the State of Qatar's affirmation of the applicability of the Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War of 1949 to the situation of the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and other Arab territories occupied since 1967.
He called for the establishment of effective international mechanisms linked to specific time frames to implement the recommendations of the Secretary-General's report on the protection of the Palestinian civilian population, including the expansion and activation of existing protection mechanisms to prevent and deter violations, in addition to continuing efforts within the United Nations within the framework of human rights with regard to protection and safety law for the Palestinian civilian population.
He also renewed the State of Qatar's condemnation of the brutal assassination crime committed by the Israeli occupation forces on the Palestinian journalist of Al-Jazeera channel Shireen Abu Akleh, calling on the international community to open an urgent investigation to hold the perpetrators of this heinous crime accountable and to prosecute those responsible before the mechanisms of international justice.
