Doha, January 25 (QNA) - University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST) hosted an enjoyable and activity-filled day, to appreciate those from the University who took part as volunteers in the organization and delivery of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Almost 1,400 students, faculty and staff members from UDST had stepped up to volunteer for the historic sporting event, hosted in Qatar for the first time, showcasing the strength of volunteering culture at the University. The appreciation event took place at the on-campus Sport and Wellness facilities and opened with a speech from the University's President, Dr. Salem Al Naemi.
"UDST is the country's leading applied education institution, and as such, we truly believe in the power of learning by doing. What greater way to learn than by getting involved in a new project as a volunteer? It is the perfect opportunity to gain experience and learn new skills, and invaluable ground on which to build character and shape personalities," said UDST President Dr. Salem Al Naemi, about the event. "We are proud to recognize and appreciate the tremendous contribution of our volunteers from UDST who were involved in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. These volunteers dedicated their time and energy to ensure the event was a success, and their involvement has helped to inspire others and nourish the volunteering mindset we have here at the University. Giving back to the community is respected and encouraged at UDST." Many of the volunteers were able to help out with volunteering on home turf, as students and staff got directly involved in the logistics required for hosting the Swiss national team's training site at the University. Other volunteers were able to apply the technical skills gained through their courses at UDST, by working on the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 sustainability reports. All volunteers got the chance to develop their teamwork, leadership and communication skills.
Recognition and appreciation from UDST's President, followed by interactive games, video presentations showcasing the volunteers' work at the World Cup, and five different food trucks with plenty to go around, ensured the event was a resounding success.
UDST leads the way for Qatar's education sector in promoting extra-curricular activities for their student community, and has always fostered a culture of volunteering on campus. It is so much a part of the community culture that the students themselves recently founded UDST's "Volunteering Club" for students and staff. The club was created to encourage giving back to the community and country, in line with UDST's values. (QNA)
