Gulf Experts, Researchers Introduced to Qatar's Projects in Date Palm Production Field

Doha, January 25 (QNA) - The participants in the annual meetings of the project development of sustainable Date Palm Production Systems in the GCC states, which is currently being convened in Doha, made a field trip on Wednesday to Rawdat Al Faras Research Station, during which they were introduced to its most prominent projects in the field of date palm production, and palm seedlings. They were also briefed on the latest researches and relevant experiments.
Director of the Agricultural Research Department at the Ministry of Municipality Hamad Saket Al Shammari said that the visit comes within the agendas of the stated annual meetings organized by the ministry, in cooperation with the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA).
He explained that experts and researchers from GCC states were briefed on the experiments conducted within this joint project at Rawdat Al Faras farm, and on the rooms for drying dates, including the experiments that were developed within the project, based on the technical specifications that were applied during the past years.
The trip included the fields of irrigation types for date palms that utilize low pressure, subsurface irrigation, and drip irrigation, in addition to getting familiarized with one type of a newly utilized biological control against the Red Palm Weevil (RPW), Al Shammari added, pointing out that there is a field gene bank affiliated to Agricultural Research Department.
Established in 2021 at Rawdat Al Faras, the department is specialized in palm types that were propagated via tissue culture, within the department's efforts, in addition to other relevant projects. (QNA)
