Qatari Center of Social Cultural for Deaf Marks International Day of Sign Languages
Doha, September 20 (QNA) - The Ministry of Culture's Center of Social Cultural for the Deaf held Wednesday evening an introductory workshop to mark the International Day of Sign Languages.
Presented by the Center's female translators, the workshop aimed to highlight and raise social awareness about sign language and its importance in conveying information to help qualify the deaf for life, society, and work.
The workshop included an introduction to the Center's roles and services that include various types of seminars and cultural and social life courses.
The UN General Assembly proclaimed Sep. 23 as the International Day of Sign Languages to raise awareness of the importance of sign language in the full realization of the human rights of people who are deaf.
According to statistics from the World Federation of the Deaf, there are 70 million deaf people around the world, 80 percent of whom live in developing countries and use more than 300 sign languages. (QNA)
