Geneva, September 25 (QNA) - The World Health Organization (WHO) said that 2022 witnessed a vast cholera outbreak as the world recorded more than double infection cases.

In a statement, WHO explained that 470,000 cholera cases were recorded in 2022, a significant year-on-year increase compared to 220,000 cases in 2021.

The statement added that Afghanistan, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Nigeria, Somalia, and Syria were particularly affected and witnessed an increase in the number of people infected with the disease in 2022.

The organization indicated that the outbreak of cholera is closely linked to the lack of adequate supplies of drinking water, as well as to poverty and conflicts. It explained that the wider the outbreak of the disease, the more difficult it is to control it.

WHO experts believe that the data available so far regarding infection cases is still insufficient. (QNA)
