UK Immigration Minister Resigns

London, December 07 (QNA) - Britain's immigration minister Robert Jenrick resigned on Wednesday over the government's latest proposal to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda.

In his resignation letter to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunake, Jenrick said "stronger protections" were needed to end "the merry-go-round of legal challenges which risk paralysing the scheme".

"Nevertheless, I am unable to take the currently proposed legislation through the Commons as I do not believe it provides us with the best possible chance of success," he said.

"I refuse to be yet another politician who makes promises on immigration to the British public but does not keep them," he added.

The government said the bill, unveiled earlier, made clear in UK law Rwanda was a safe country for asylum seekers. Last month, the UK's highest court ruled that the plans to send some asylum seekers to Rwanda were unlawful as they could "a real risk of ill-treatment by reason of refoulement to their country of origin if they were removed to Rwanda."
