Munich, February 16 (QNA) - The European Union needs to massively expand its deterrence and defense capabilities, so that it does not always have to rely on the United States, the bloc's top diplomat said on Friday.
The EU was very happy for decades under the American security umbrella, Josep Borrell, the European Union's high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, said on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. "But the American umbrella may not be open all the time." The EU needs to be more autonomous than before, Borrell said, without specifying whether he believes Europe should adopt a new system of nuclear deterrence. (QNA)
