Doha, July 02 (QNA) - Under the chairmanship of HE Dr. Ali bin Fetais Al Marri, the President of the GOPAC, the Global Organization of Parliamentarians Against Corruption (GOPAC) held the regular meeting of its Executive Committee in Doha, to exchange information, lessons, and best practices related to anti-corruption measures.

The committee, whose membership includes the heads of the organization's regional offices and which consists of six geographical groups, discussed a number of topics on its agenda, including accepting new members, studying the organization's annual budget, listening to the operational plan presented by the organization's executive management, in addition to reviewing the participation in various international forums, and the official website of the GOPAC was launched.

HE Dr. Ali bin Fetais Al Marri said that the GOPAC aims to exchange information, lessons learned, and best practices, in addition to undertaking projects to reduce corruption, promote good governance, cooperate with international financial institutions and civil society organizations that share common goals, and emphasize the principles of the rule of law in establishing a healthy, free, and productive society.

His Excellency asserted the organization's endeavor to achieve these goals through cooperation with regional branches in setting behavioral standards aimed at enhancing transparency, good governance, and strengthening the rule of law.

HE Dr. Ali bin Fetais Al Marri indicated that the organization, on the other hand, exchanges information on lessons learned and best practices related to anti-corruption measures, and encourages parliaments and parliamentarians to formulate and enact legislation that promotes good governance and transparency. He added that the GOPC also aims to strengthen measures aimed at effectively confronting corruption and increasing the level of public awareness of the issue of corruption at all levels of society by educating parliamentarians and policymakers on the existence of corruption, its nature, and ways to combat it.

His Excellency also pointed out that through international participation, GOPAC calls for the inclusion of anti-corruption measures in all government programs and to improve the capabilities of national and regional institutions in effectively confronting corruption. This can be done by working with national and regional bodies in mobilizing the necessary resources for anti-corruption programs through various means, including exchanging information through websites and supporting the organization of anti-corruption workshops at the national, regional, and international levels.

His Excellency said that the GOPAC holds a major international conference on an anti-corruption issue every two years to coordinate and cooperate with international organizations, parliamentary institutions, civil society, and other organizations, on all matters aimed at improving governance, transparency, and accountability, in addition to conducting research and disseminating information on best practices and studying members' issues to enhance and seek the organization's goals and achieve its objectives.

The meeting concluded with the approval of the annual budget and the adoption of an operational plan for the organization until 2026, headed by the State of Qatar. It also identified the strategic priorities for the coming period in light of the development of parliamentary endeavors in various international forums in the field of combating corruption, most notably the increase in parliamentary contributions to the conferences of the States Parties to the United Nations Convention against Corruption.
