COP 29: Ministry of Environment Discusses Climate Resilience for Economic Diversification
Baku, November 14 (QNA) - The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change hosted a side event at the Qatari Pavilion at COP 29. Themed "Building Resilience through Economic Diversification in a Changing Climate", the side event explored how economic diversification can enhance climate resilience and sustainable growth.
It covered strategies such as transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy, implementing climate-smart agriculture, and fostering eco-tourism, including addressing policy frameworks and financing mechanisms which are essential for successful diversification efforts.
Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (KAHRAMAA)'s Manager of Conservation and Energy Efficiency Department Dr. Rashid Rahimi explained how KAHRAMAA integrated climate resilience into Qatar's water and energy infrastructure, the role of economic diversification in supporting these efforts, the strategies that KAHRAMAA implemented to enhance energy efficiency and reduce emissions, and how do these align with Qatar's broader goals for sustainable economic growth and resilience in the face of climate change.
Energy and Climate Change Specialist, Brazilian Center for International Relations (CEBRI), Dr. Julia Paletta highlighted how Brazil leveraged economic diversification and international cooperation to strengthen resilience against climate impacts. She also discussed the CEBRI's policy recommendations to balance Brazil's economic growth with climate resilience, particularly in sectors like agriculture and energy.
Director, Economic Cooperation and Trade, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), Dr. Elisabeth Turk spoke about the role of trade, infrastructure investment and innovation in this regard.
An Organization for Socio-Economic Development (AOSED)'s Executive Director Shamim Arfeen highlighted NGOs' support for communities to diversify their economies to reduce vulnerability to climate-related risks and presented successful approaches in promoting sustainable livelihoods that both strengthen resilience and contribute to economic growth.
