Cairo, October 09 (QNA) - The Arab League organized Wednesday a celebration of the Arab Environment Day at its headquarters in Cairo, with the participation of experts from Arab countries, organizations and civil society.
The Arab League said in a statement that the celebration of the Arab Environment Day, which falls on Oct. 14 of each year, aims to shed light on the efforts made by Arab countries to enhance resilience in the face of drought and combat desertification, noting that Arab countries and specialized Arab organizations hold various seminars, activities and programs on this occasion, in order to spread environmental awareness and discuss the most important environmental issues and challenges in the Arab region.
In this context, HE Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Economic Affairs Sector at the Arab League Ambassador Ali bin Ibrahim Al Maliki said that the theme of this year's celebration was approved in the previous session of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs.
He stressed the importance of facing regional and international challenges in order to adhere to environmental treaties and sustainable development in the Arab region, noting that October 14 of this year coincides with the preparatory meetings for the 35th session of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment, which is being held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The Arab countries celebrate Arab Environment Day on Oct. 14 of each year, as this coincides with the date of issuance of the decisions of the first meeting of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment on Oct. 14, 1987. (QNA)
